Sometimes Failure is Good
I failed spectacularly only consoling myself with the thought “If you are going to fail then why not do it in style?”
When I moved to Fernhaven in April 2024, I had all intentions of completing the construction of the cabin, authoring the next book of my journey to building the cabin, and keeping up with social media, while earning money working remotely as a technical writer.
I did not achieve any of these except one. Whilst others were kind enough to point out, all the successes I did have in the last year, I was rather less supportive of myself. I was too focused on what I had not done, instead of what I did. It has taken me until now to be kind enough to myself to be OK with that.
Go with the flow
I have learnt to be more adaptable and to accept that a goal set may need to change based on new information you discover as you make progress. It is far better to assess, shift and move forward and not get so hung up on sticking with the original plan. Take a step back look at the bigger picture and ask yourself by letting this go am I still moving towards my great goals?
So here I am on the cusp of another year wanting a different approach to goal setting. I like setting myself hard challenges, isn’t that what we are supposed to do? Challenge ourselves to get out of our comfort zone, and make goals lofty enough they scare us a little bit?
More on goals later, but first I want to fill you in on what’s been happening, and then talk about what comes next.
The cabin while not complete is a lot more complete than it was in the last blog post of May 2024. I have full power, I have a bathroom, I have a septic system, I have a staircase, I have a bedroom loft, I have a kitchen! The cabin is almost liveable.
The next book about building the cabin is 30% first draft written, I have notes for the rest. I just need to write!
I have a new companion – Loki, he was born April 21, 2024, and has been helping me with the cabin, and writing and my fearless travel companion. More on his adventures in the book too.
I am again next year going to move to Fernhaven for the
summer in April. More work around the homestead, gardening, trail building,
forest management and working with the land.
I am planning on completing the second book hopefully in 2025, it will be much different, in style and order. To be consistent and constant in my writing habits. Authors always say if you want to be a writer then you have to write. Obvious! You may be thinking…. But it is too easy to do it tomorrow or wait until I am “in the mood” or write when I’ve finished everything else. So, I give myself permission to write every day, even if I haven’t done everything else.
Continuing to work remotely but with balance. I plan to work less hours and earn more money.
The Word of 2025
Every year I find a word pops into my heading when I think about the new year, a word that is the essence of what the year may be. My word for 2025 is “wholesome”.
I will endeavour to live, promote and support others in making 2025 wholesome for all.
When you think of 2025 what word does it conjure up for you?
I am filled with excitement, gratitude, and optimism for 2025. What are you going to achieve in 2025?
What fills you with excitement and gratitude?
